this is a bit off topic, but how is it possible that Boo Radley can go about leaving things in trees, fixing pants, and giving blankets when he is a prisoner in his house?

Yeah I think that it just goes to show that Boo Radley really isn't such a bad guy. He was just in the wrong crowd when he was younger and the outcome was worst than he expected. I got a little confused as to how he got the gum and pocket watch and stuff to put in the tree but when it was filled with concrete, it just showed how much of a prisoner he really is.

The gifts are a representation of something else. They show the childish side that Boo was never able to let out being stuck in the house. They show that Boo is still treated like a child inside. The cememnt represented as Nick said a prisoner of his own resentation. He just wants to reach the world.

yeah the objects in the tree were for sure hints from boo radley to show them that he really doesnt want poeple to get rumors about him and stuff..it seems as if hes trying to pull away from the influence mr radley had on him...it is as if he if foreshadowing jem and scout that he really wants to break loose of the chains that are holding him down

There is no proof to this so far, but maybe boo started coming out when his father died. Nathan Radley may be letting him out only for a few hours a day or week, and it might be past midnight so that no one knows. I don't know if Nathan is wicked, but the father of boo is!

The gifts in the tree seem really weird to me. I think maybe its a way to give Boo Radley a part in the story since you really don't hear anything from him. He stays inside all the time so you don't really know much about him. People mentioned its a way to show Boo is nicer than the neighbor people think. I concure.

Giving gifts to small children.... sounds like a child predator.... But I guess it could just be that he's a nice guy... that's trying to express his kindness.

i think that the items dont have a real meaning by themselves, but are there to show the other side of boo radley. he is so often described as this horrific, malevolent person, but as we get deeper into the story, we learn that he is really a nice human being. i dont think that the items have any other meaning but to show the true side of boo radley, and to make it clear to the kids that he is not what people say he is. i agree with what isabeau says, that the items do not show how boo has changed, but they are there to show the kids that boo is a normal person.

Like that of what mariea said he is prisoner in that house and still is a child inside!

i dont think that the gifts show that boo is still a child inside, or is treated as one. i think that the gifts are a message from boo. that he is not the monster people say he is, but a real human being like everyone else. that he is kind and has a heart, and not this horrid being that people put him out to be.

I think Boo Radley, or Mr. Radley, or whoever put the things in the tree were trying to play tricks on the kids. I think he was trying to give them something to do and that the different items represent something, that we may find out in the end of the book. Maybe it means that Boo wants to come out but doesn't know how.

I think that it shows the nicer side of Boo Radley. And I think that maybe he is trying to befriend Scout and Jem. It shows the readers that read the book that Boo is not a cruel and mean as he seemed in the other parts of the book.

Sorry, I pressed the wrong button. So I'm just going to continue what I was saying.
So, I'm not sure that that Boo was curious about the outside world, I just think that he was watching Jem and Scout with Atticus and seeing them grow up. I think he just wanted to be a part of their lives and a part of what a real family is.
