No, scout is not racist. She gets along with the colored people jusst as well as anyone else. Nigger is the word that scout hears at school and from the towns people and she doesn't realize that it is an impolite term used mostly by racist people. She fights with kids because she cannot stand for people putting her dad down and talking about him with such dislike because she loves and respects atticus.

It's just a common phrase, like white or african american. She knows what she means by saying it, it just common. If that is so then why does Atticus tell her time after time to not to use that word? The word obviously does not have as much attatched to it as it does today, but it is still offensive and not a common word.

Robert, I think that even if they were educated they still would come up with the worst word possible to put down a race that they believe is inferior to them.

Barron, your right about that she knows what it means, but she may not know if its impolite and rude. DJ and i were talking about how people call others african americans. When they were just shipped here against their will what were they called? They definently were not called "African Americans" they were called "Africans" or other rude names. The words together "African American" really mean that they are born citizens of the USA, but their ancestors came from africa. Now it does not really matter whether or not they were born here or there, they seem to all be "African Americans" because it sounds good and respectful. I've never heard myself called "Asian American" or "Chinese American" because it just doesn't sound good, even though I was born here. It may sound good, but what if they were proud to be African and they were born there and didn't want american in their name? then should you call them what they want to be called or what sounds good to you, so you wont get beaten up one night? there is no shame in having a background. If they were born there and are not yet citizens, call them what they are... African. I dont find chinese being offensive. I think that the citezen of the USA stuff came at max about 200 years ago, so what were they called before then? there were people who still respected them then and were not rude to them.
