Mayella was desperate for someone to love her because her father doesn't. Once her plane backfired and she realized what she had done she had to clear the record of all suspicion. It seemed as though Bob had known very well what happened as though Mayella had explained it all to him. I feel really disappointed ( i don't think that word really covers it) that Tom Robinson lost all hope and tried to escape. there is really no good outcome if he were to escape, a Wanted raping neroe on the loose. he wouldn't even be able to go home to his family because they would look for him. I think that it is a bit inconsiderate that he would just give up hope after all that Atticus had done for him.

Yep, unless you can change the way the town thinks, he doesn't really have much of a chance. But if Atticus is somehow able to convince them to abandon their racist beliefs, which would be pretty hard to do... yeah, you can't change the beliefs of a whole town with one trial, but they began to quesstion their beliefs and in time maybe there would be a change.

Robert, it seems odd that a whole town can respect someone as much as they respect Atticus and not Believe him. And yet they can believe a woman from the scummiest most untrustworthy family in town.
