the ducks and the pond symbolize holden and his life. he is kind of just moving through life with no purpose, no motivation to do anything with his life and so when the lake "his life" is frozen over where does he go from there? the red hat could possibly symbolize a security blanket he keeps with him....?

The ducks at the pond might be just something he is intrested in just because or beneath his conscoiuosness it symbolizes himslef being a duck on the frozen pond alone and unsure of where to go. And the red hat may symbolize a new begining and a beacon to the future.

[glow=purple,2,300]I think the ducks in central story has to do with Holden wondering where people go when they leave their home. He knows they come back, but he is not sure where they go to in the winter. The red bill hat I think represents Holden as a different duck. One that leaves his home but doesn't want to go back.[/glow]

the ducks symbolize what he thinks of himself he doesnt know whats going to happen to him and he wonders what the ducks do so he can have an example of what maybe he should do because at this point he doesnt know where to go . i think the red hat symbolizes that hes different and he tries to show hes a rebel and doesn't care what other people think

Holdens red hat is probably one of his most prized possession and its like a teddy bear to him. He is also just curious about why they dont stay there during the winter

I think the ducks are always mentioned in the story because he is going though what the ducks are going through except the ducks know where to go and holden doesn't.That is why he is so curious to where the ducks go after the pond is frozen and he wants to learn from their experience. The hat is also mentioned probably because That is one of his prized possesions. It takes care of his ears when they are cold and it protects him from the weather. He walks often alot so he really needs it.

i think the ducks are just holdens way of being curious. he might be observing others on what they do when they have nowhere else to go. so holden, now not going to school, is wondering where he should go.
and i think the hate is just holdens way of trying to be original.

i think he chose ducks because they relate to his own life.other animals might not work because they stay in one place.

Maddiepie, Why do you think that holden's hat is his most prized possesion? is it really that important? What does it symbolize to you?

The ducks that are mentioned in the book reminds me of Holdens life. This symbolizes holdens life in a way that he feels and is isolated from the world. The birds move and travel to one place after another and never stay in one place. That reminds me of Holden. He leaves school. He is alone in the world cares less about what people think. And school. When the lake freezes and has a feel of no life reminds me of Holden. He makes it seem like life doesn't matter.

i thinks its weird that Salinger never writes whether or not Holden finds the real meaning behind the ducks. what do you think this means?

as plair said, holden imagines what his life would be like compared to the ducks' life. he is always getting kicked out of school and drinking and smoking to relieve stress. he has a troubled life and he can relate to the ducks. The hat is the one thing he controls in his life

I think the hat and ducks are things that stay positive with holden, and he wonders about where the ducks go and the hat is very cool to him.
