i think holden thinks hes hot sh%$ so he talks to everyone, makes dates with loads of girls and thinks he can do anything. i also think its obvious by how he treats girls like crap and almost pushes them away.

Holden tries to find someone to be with. He looks and meets people. Sunny was someone he just agreed to have over but not for long. Sally was a girl whom Holden thought was gorgeous. He wanted her so much. He went on a date with her and got annoyed with her and yelled at her. He made her cry and upset. So Holden leaves her thinking about Jane. The girl he truely loves. He gets mad. Goes to the bar, gets drunk. And called Jane and gets her grandmother and her mad. That was a huge mistake. Holden is a messed up character. He should know that he should achieve in life. In school. Then GO an find someone special. No wonder why Jane doesn't like Holden in that way. I wouln't.

he as i have said before has a very negative way at looking at the world. Everyone he meets he has to find their bad habit or something that just annoys him about them. And he either feels guilty, bad, depressed or just terrible. Once in a while he likes them. But he said once that he ends up missing everyone once he dosen't see them for a while. And i think it is so because he never grabs the moment or enjoys them trull but has to focus on finding something bad about them.

i think that Holden keeps trying new experiences that end in disastrous results. I think he keeps trying to find someone he can be with, but messes it up when he thinks of Jane... The thing with sunny was because he was alone, and the thing with sally Hayes was a fluke. I think he wanted to be with Jane, but doesn't know what to do... the thing with the cabs drivers is loneliness as well, he wants them to have drinks with him because he has no one else to be with. that is why i think everything that holden has done ends disastrously and he ends up lonely. ;D ver good idea tim but i don't know if it he is exactly lonely in the end.

i think that Holden just wants to find someone that likes him. And he is also lonely and bored right now. He doesn't really have anything to do and is just getting into situations with women and then changes his mind.

Holden's main goal in the book is to (as lame as it sounds) find a friend. He really didn't connect with anyone at Pencey, and he cannot go back home yet. However, not many people want to just be his friend. However, when they do, like Sally and the woman on they train, he pushes them away. They return friendship back to him, and he suddenly does something wrong, like deciding to never visit the train woman, or offending Sally. Holden is (and this is probably a bad metaphor but the only one I can think of) like a turtle. He pokes his head out, and moves around, but if anyone tries to make contact with him. He retreats into a shell of unfriendliness because he knows he will be safe there.

I think Holden really just doesn't like people very much. No matter how nice or caring you are he just seems to resent you even more. I wonder if Allie's death is the source of his problems?

[glow=purple,2,300]I think - well it's obvious that Holden doesn't like his life, so I think he does stuff that makes other people happy to see if it will make him happy. So in a way, Holden is a phony. Examples are him taking Sally to see a play. He sees all the other couples who go and see plays and how happy they are, but when he tries it, he isn't happy. He has a prostitute come to his room and she isn't able to make him happy. So I think Holden is lost and doesn't know who he is. I think he is trying so hard to be different than everyone else (the phonies), that he makes himself depressed because he knows its not working. Since Holden is so stubborn, he will continue to act the way he does. He knows that everyone is not really a phony, he is just jealous that their lives are good and his isn't. But what he doesn't realize is, his life is good, he is just ruining it by trying too hard to be something he's not. So he uses an excuse to make himself feel better- he calls all the happy people in the world "phonies."[/glow]

i think holden likes having the attention and company of all those "phony" peepl but he doesnt want to associate himself with them just in case they are not agreeable in other peepls opinions. OR he feels hes beneath them and is jealous of ther lives so he insults them.

I agree with tim. holden is always trying to act all grown-up and its not working. he needs to just be a kid while he still can.

Holden gets himself into all these situations and if his mood changes, then he uses the quick way to get out of it. with sunny, he didnt want her anymore so he just paid her and told her to leave. with sally hayes he got frustrated and annoyed with her so he jus took out all his anger on her. he doesnt know how to control himself and his emotions. i still dont understand tho, why he gets himself into this stuff in the first place. that is really interesting. i didn't notice that before.
