I think that the book title means that Holden wants to catch people from falling. Throughout his life, he has fallen in many ways. He's gotten kicked out of numerous schools, gotten into drinking, smoking, and lying. J.D. Salinger is trying to inform people about falling. If you stop yourself early enough, you won't fall as bad as some people. Holden semi-saved himself during the end of the book. Caulfield can some what be called a catcher because he sort of saved himself from falling all the way by going back home and seeing Phoebe, which calmed him down and made himself realize he needed a change. When Mr. Antolini warns Holden that he is headed for a fall, this IS the same "fall" as the children face who play in the rye. [glow=red,2,300]This book IS the catcher in the rye.[/glow]

i think holden wants to help kids who've strayed off the right path, he wants to help because noone was there to "catch" him whenever he fell.

Reading this book and seeing how Holden is great with kids made me realize that towards the end he wants to help kids. "The Catcher in the Rye" I think means that Holden is the catcher who helps kids from falling hard. Helps kids to not be like him. He could have been a great student. But he never applied himself. I thiink he set a horrible example to kids. But having him help them is great. Kids need guidance.

[glow=purple,2,300]I think "the catcher in the rye" means that there will always be someone to catch you when you feel like you are falling. Even if you can't see them(in the rye) or you don't know who they are. I think this book has meaning to J.D. Salinger because he wrote it. What it is, only he knows. Some readers probably are in the rye and just as lost as Holden who is in the rye. But now he is trying to get out. No. I think everybody has a different problem therefore everyone takes different falls. I don't think this book is the catcher in the rye. I didn't think it said anything very important or memorable. No, Holden hasn't fullfilled his dream because he just realized it.[/glow]

well based from what i read from the book, i think that the book is named catcher in the rye because holden is trying to be the catcher in the rye, leading innocent children toward the right direction. in other words i think that holden is trying to lead and influence children to do good and not do evil.

oh... i read the question wrong. i think that the catcher in the rye means that one is to lead the other to the right direction. and like what others said, a catcher in the rye saves others from "falling" which to me means from falling in to the hands of evil. so the catcher in the ryte catches them and brings them to safety ( the good direction).
