Please read the project assignment details on the course website before responding. Also check the calendar dates as I went ahead and assigned everyone to specific dates - trying my best to keep your two presentations, this and What's News, far apart. I hope you are OK with your given dates, but if not, let me know.www.mrgibbs.com/tu2/presentation/index.htmlwww.mrgibbs.com/tu2/news/news_about.htmlwww.mrgibbs.com/tu2/news/news_opensrc_cal.html[glow=red,2,300]Post Topic:[/glow][size=3]Share what specific area of technology you will present on and list the main open-source software you will share. Also list other software titles that you will mention. First up - always a challenge!
I was going to present on OpenOffice, but I think I will do something that I am more unfamiliar with and will benefit my on-line presence (I am always trying to think ahead).
I am going to present on discussion boards. I am experimenting with two open source application now - punbb and phpbb. I will walk through the download, FTP, and installation process. Once the software is installed, I will walk through the initial setup process, including setting up the database, and creating user accounts.

Hello all, I will try and tackle multi-media (mainly video editing and audio editing Audacitiy, etc.) Since my interest lies here, I will be investigating things that students can quickly learn and use to make and share video and audio work. More details to follow as they bubble to the surface.

I would like to learn about RSS feeds. I have no idea about them so any chance I can get some guidance to begin this considering I am presenting in the 2nd week?

I'm still mulling this over . . . I'm thinking about learning something I can use with my students . . . One thing I would like them to use is social bookmarking such as Diigo or Delicious. But those are really web 2.0 types of things, so I'm not sure if that's okay. I could do image editing software . . . like photoshop . . . but I'm not real familiar with open source image editing tools . . . Okay, I guess I'm really too undecided to comment right now . . . but you have to admit I'm using the ellipses rather well (did I spell that correctly??)

Joe - I think has changed from Open Office to Discussion Boards to Linux to Hmmmm. We're not sure right now. He will suprise us as our first presenter.
Roger - I will back you on your topic of video editing. You do all you can and I will fill in the gaps as that's one of my strong suits.
Carleen - I'm overjoyed that you are choosing RSS feeds. I know enough about them to use them, but there's so very very very much I don't know yet. Thanks for taking that on.
I have a long list of apps I want to share. However, I will hold mine back in case they are chosen by you. Any you don't pick, I'll stick in there.
On our March 5 I want to continue with Word, then shift to PPT. I'm NOT going to do rudimentary PPT how-to. I will show you some advanced features and options and answer any questions.
I also want to present on CODECS. What are they and such. That will harmonize with Roger's presentation, so I'll wait until the time is right.
I also want to talk on BITTORRENT and DVD copying and rendering - the good, the bad, the illegal. I'll jump on that the first open window of time we have because that lesson in already in my training bag o' tricks.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Heidi and I are also unclear on how open source software is different from a web 2.0 application. We have many questions, however, we are toying with the idea, if we are in the right toy store, of presenting on Voicethread.com. If this works, we licked it and no one else can take it. Nanny nanny nanny.

I've settled on graphic arts software. Not sure which one yet though. But I'll do something on image file types, image resolutions, basic cropping, improving, resizing, etc.

Well, I feel like an idiot, but I'm changing my topic again . . . to what ? you may be wondering . . . so am I. Here's the problem I'm having. I was thinking I'd do a presentation on photo editing software, but that's not something I need to learn. I don't want to really learn how to use an open source software version of an image editing program because I already use a purchased version -- Photoshop Elements and Photoshop. I was leaning towards doing a presentation on that way because I know the software for PE pretty well, so I thought it would be fairly straightforward to share, but I don't really want to take the time to master/ have in-depth understanding of a software I won't actually be using. So I'm back to the drawing board. Tick, tick, tick . . . The other problem is, whatever I prepare has to be done on a mac but presented on a pc . . . so that's frustrating too. Anyhow, just thought I'd share. Thanks for listening.

Hi and responding to Karen. Karen, I understand the quandary. I too will have to present something on a program I and others will probably use (Windows MovieMaker), but is not my personal first choice. That would be Final Cut Express for the mac. But since I and others don't use macs in the classroom and moviemaker is free with pc's, I'll cook up something for that. I can also see what I can put together with Audacity. At CUE I was exposed to a program called Frames which is digital storytelling/voice/music-over software. It's not free, but cheap at $50. It's got possibilities for classroom use and I would show it off from the level I've learned thus far if people are interested. It's dual platform also. A challenge for me is how to show/say anything "in-depth" in 20-30 minutes about multi-media software. Any ideas of how to go forward (Steve?) would help out. I also came back with a little Flip HD video camera that I plan to guinea-pig with class tomorrow using Hot Wheels cars and timers. Thanks for listening!

Mellissa and I will do GIMP, just because I like the name and I couldn't find any good free programs for you know what!
