Malea, I don't think that Maycomb is a sleepy little town. I certainly know that my first day of first grade did not involve molasses, mice, a student leaving, and with the teacher crying by the end of it. By the way, what teacher crys after being insulted by a first grader? Good point, Ms Cech. It seems odd that a 1st grader can make a teacher cry. However, keep in mind she is new to the profession. Teaching that first year can be a scary and anxious experience. Thank goodness she's not teaching freshmen. This also acts as a nice segue to the next question...

Dill is an important character because he comes from somewhere else. This could be a chance to bring in different views on things. Families tend to stick together and believe the same things. Dill brings in controversy.

I think Dill is a very useful character because he brings a very outgoing atitude with him to the home. With that attitude, I think that the lives of Scout and Jem will change completly because, he will enclourage them to get Boo Radley to come out. Also, I think that Dill will split Jem and Scout apart which could make them grow apart, creating completly different lives then expected.

I agree with what Marilyn said about how Dill is there to push the other characters out of their comfort zones. Scout and Jem were content to leave the Radley house alone before Dill came. Now by becoming so curious with Boo Radley, they are out of their comfort zone.

Dill seems to be the behind the scenes trouble and idea inventer. he gets the other two children thinking while he is there, and leaves them in an equal state over the school terms. I am sure that even if Dill was not there, Jem and Scout would have found the same path of adventure but just at a slower rate. Dill Seems to excell their thinking and action process. Dill started the adventure and they as a group plan to finish it together.

To:Cech
yes, you are right about families sticking together and agreeing on the same things. I think that it is because families know that when you disagree on something it may become disastrous and a life long pain and guilt. even if each single family member thinks differently, usually the loudest one will quickly be followed on how they think. Dill is not in that family, but just a close friend and their life may not effect his forever and therefore he is able to say and do as he pleases and wants and know that they won't always have a grudge on him.

Dill is a useful character because without him, it seems that the story would be a lot less easier to keep reading. For me, Dill was more interesting because of his interest for the Radley House. I dont know if this is true or not, but Dill seems to be the character that will make events to come more exciting.

Yea Mr. Gibbs without an outside character (Dill) it would be harder to learn about the other characters. Dill is an extremly important character if you really think about it and a neccesity. He is making a major differnce in Maycomb because like you said he is an outsider who is curious. Dill has the guts to do things that Jem and Scout wouldn't do. Plus it is summer when he comes so they have a lot of free time to investigate and find out mre about Radley and his past. Im starting to get into this case. lol. Radely is really important.....TO BE CONTINUED...Ba dum dum...da da dum..

I think Dill is important for two reasons. One, he brings Maycomb out of the state of being a quiet, sleepy town (at least for Scout and Jem). Second, he is putting great amounts of peer pressure on the Finch children to get Boo Radley to reveal himself. Somthing tells me this new hobby might get 'em into trouble a few times. ((and sorry about the late post, my family decided they were gonna monopolize every computer on the west coast. : /))

I think Dill was put into the story to help link things together. If it wasnt for Dill the children would have never been incouraged to go and explore around the boo Radley house. Secondly i think he was put into the story to represent a free thinking soul that doesnt use others judgements to decided what he is going to do.

[glow=red,2,300][tr]I think that dill is kind of a trouble maker who likes getting other people in trouble. He likes to do things that puts the kids lives in Jeopardy. I think he is in thier to make the book more exciting and so the kids have someone to talk to and play games with.

Dill represents the different seasons and time periods in the Children's lives, since he only comes in the Summer. He brings new ideas and games to the summer. Its something new and he gives them something to look forward to.
