I feel that dill is like a normal person. he has watched so much dracula that he wants fun and scary things to happen to his life, so when he hears about boo radley. He is very interested and makes Jem and Scout interested too. he is important first for that he is interesting so people don't fall asleep and he kind of wakes up the kids to all the stuff in there boring town.

Good point, Samantha, about him watching Dracula. That probably set him up to be curious about Boo Radley, who is living the life and has the reputation of a vampire-like figure.

i think dill has the same purpose as ms caroline, which is to give information and inroduce new characters into the story. because of dill, we learn a lot of the radley's and their family history. this is because of dill's curiosity of the mysterious radley house, and his never ending questions and pending inquisitiveness. we learn not only of the family history, but of the many stories created about the family.

i also think that dill has a purpose in the story to excite things up. without his curious character, jem and scout would have never thought to even go close to the radley house. but because of dill's great interest, jem and scout get involved in circumstanses that they would have never gotten into before. for instance, when they go inside the radley's backyard to try and get a glimpse of boo radley, and end up getting caught. that would have never happened without dill's urging. to sum it up, dill is there to give a sizzle and "pop" to the old and boring town of maycomb.

yes, i support what is said, how dill is here to create excitement and thrill to the story. i think without this character, the story would stil be good, but dull.

Malea, I don't think that Maycomb is a sleepy little town. I certainly know that my first day of first grade did not involve molasses, mice, a student leaving, and with the teacher crying by the end of it. By the way, what teacher crys after being insulted by a first grader? Good point, Ms Cech. It seems odd that a 1st grader can make a teacher cry. However, keep in mind she is new to the profession. Teaching that first year can be a scary and anxious experience. Thank goodness she's not teaching freshmen. This also acts as a nice segue to the next question...THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE QUESTION, JUST ABOUT WHAT OTHERS WROTE. Technically that was not a first grader. Burris said that he's been coming to the first grade for three years. so he would have been a 3rd or 4th grader by that time depending on if he included the third year as that year. and he could very well suppose to be in high school because i'm not sure if he could count..... but thats not the point; the point is that he definantly was older than the rest of them and should have been in a different grade level.

Ahh, I forgot to post on all the early questions. Dangit. Dill definitely contributed to giving the story a plot, by having the idea of trying to make Boo Radley come out. He's also an interesting character, because he's kinda different. But I think everyone has already said everything I was going to say.

I would just like to say that I just watched Capote with my mom, and wow! You can totally tell that Dill was based on Truman Capote. The way he views things and the way he looks, I can totally picture it.

I agree with isabeauc on the first page of this discussion about that Maycomb is a small town. I also agree with her beliefs on Dill.
