Holden is telling his story from a sanitarium. Based on what you've learned about him in the first few chapters, what is your opinion of Holden? Do you think he has a psychological problem, or do you think he's more just an average teenager going through a rebellious stage? What do you make of his mannerisms, such as saying "always" and "never" a lot, and calling everyone and everything phony? [glow=purple,2,300]I think Holden is unmotivated/has no goals. He doesn't know what he wants to do with his life, so he does nothing in school. That is why he is kicked out of his school. Since he has no goals, i think he gets jealous of all the kids around him who do have goals. So to cover up his jealousy, he tries to find a flaw in them and calls them all "phony". This makes him feel better about himself. thats about it.[/glow]

i think Holden is kind of like a "whatever" type of guy. He doesn't really take things too seriously in that he doesn't freak out about the things other people would make such a big deal of. He likes to keep a lot of things to himself, but he doesn't mind some company now and then. He has a lot of opinions, but doesn't completely express them to what people he does talk to. Holden also has an emotional side which he expresses or explores when he reads books. He seems like a regular person with issues like the rest of us, apart from the fact that he's been expelled from so many schools.

i think Holden uses words like always and never because he's never really been exposed to anything else. he's been kicked out of like every school, so how's he supposed to learn anything different? basically i think he's at point where it's like "why try anymore?" He calls people phony because he can always sense the strange difference we all have and the only way he can think of describing it, is by saying the person is phony.

i think holden has no goals for his life and kind of just expects everything to just work out. i think he's going through a teenage rebellious stage but he's taken it too far to the point where it will mess up all the other stages of his life. and i think he calls everyone a phony because they do as they're told and are kind of "fake people" because they follow society and have no feelings or emotions.

My opinion of Holden is that he's a sit back and expect the world to come to him kind of guy. However this isn't a physiological problem to me it is a rebellious act against mainly his parents. This comes in the way of just saying hes not going to aces himself in school. It seems that he uses "always" and "never" because he is come upon people who don't exactly taking him seriously so he is trying to justify himself, also i believe that he tries to call everyone "phony" to make him feel better about himself. It's like his form of bulling someone without the physical confrontation of these "phony" people.

;DPuzapalooza, [glow=red,2,300] i agree with you on the majority of what you have said, but what gives you the impression that Holden is jealous of them? i am really curious.[/glow]

i think that holden is a person who doesn't know what he wants. he doesn't know what school he wants to be at and ultimately he doesn't know what he wants to do and that makes it seem like he doesn't care about anything.

Reading the first 3 chapters of The Catcher in the Rye, I've come to realize that Holden seems like a layed back kind of guy. He doesn't really seem to care bout his education and that he's always been kicked out from college to college. As time goes by, he's just living life as it comes.

Holden is guy that is lazy and doesn't care about his actions...he obviously has no goal in life so he decides to fail school.he doesn't realize how hard his parents are working for him to go to school and he just lets go of it like it doesn't matter.he thinks he doesn't need to do anything to get what he wants.he is self centered, rude, and doesn't care about how others feel.he only cares about himself.

[glow=red,2,300] ...but at the first sign of problem, he quits. Casing point, he quit 4 schools because he thought they were all phonies...[/glow] Tim i really dont see this being the main reason for him quiting other that calling them phony. actually that looks just like a cover up. do you have another example?
