i can relate to holden in a few ways. for one i feel i'm pretty crazy, and you'd agree if u knew half the things going on in my head. so i don't think hes weird or anything, just dealing with life in his own way, which other people see as abnormal.

In my opinion, Holden is very unique, and at first I was going to vote for the one that said he was unique and totally crazy. But really, he's not crazy. He is very strange though but that's what makes him him. He chooses to live the way he does because that's what suits him and his lifestyle.

i think heather has a good point when he talks about Allie dying i know thats a hard thing to go through. my question is why doesn't it affect DB and phoebe as much as him?

miles...you don't think him being depressed all the time and wanting to commit suicide and hating everything are bad at all?

I think that Holden had a bad view on education and learning. Back in the 50's people were more harsher and cruel to the students. I would have hated school myself if I was growing up in a harsh environment. I wouldn't want to be made to do anything. And being slapped around. Holden grew up in a rich family and was expected to be a wonderful and smart boy who would achieve in life. So having all that pressure on him probably made him stop trying. Yes this relates in some ways to my life. Except it the opposite for me. I wasn't being pressured to do work. I wasn't actually learning when I was little. I wanted to learn but nobody taught me til I got adopted. But even now. If I'm pressured them I would feel like I had a huge weight on me. I would hate it.

trully when we got closer to the end there was a feeling that i could enderstand how he was feeling at the time. It's just so true about how we don't know what we are doing sometimes and everything seems so complicated and you just don't know what to do with yourself. There is always something he hates about his friends and trull i think we all have that brief feeling in which you just are annoyed by everyone and everything but he is haveing a prolonged phase in which he hates the world. I sometimes am there but i always apply myself which is probably the only thing different between me and him.

I think Holden has some problems. But he isn't being forced to flunk out of school, and he could actually pass if he tried. He isn't even being forced to live on the streets and stay in hotels. He could go home if he wanted. he does have problems, but their not that bad and he could fix them easily.

I think that Holden could have a form of severe depression. symptoms of severe depression include problems in a family work or school life, not just feeling sad. I believe Holden knows this himself, but doesn't want to acknowledge it, hence his disapproval of wanting to go to a psychoanalyst.

I have been reading through other comments, and I see that many people feel that what Holden is going through is his nature, and will pass in time. One reason I somewhat doubt this is, as Collins stated in the first post, "He comes from a rich family...His life can't be that bad...". The truth is, it isn't. Because of his families good money situation, he is very used to getting money from his parents, probably with little to now compensation back to them... Now, in prep school, he has to deal with not being taken care of all the time, and with people he may not necessarily like. So, no, I don't think these are normal teenager problems to the extent which holden has. I believe they are influenced from his prosperous family being taken for granted.
