Personally, I'm surprised so many people didn't like this book. In my opinion, it gave the insight of the true human essence, and the book portrays Holden's thoughts without bias of who is reading it. In most books and talks, speech and thoughts are toned down to be more appropriate. Holden shows a more primal thought process that I think is in all of us, but is rarely ever shown, and I quite enjoyed following Holden through his pessimistic (lol vocab word) world. tropygrl, I can see why the language could bother you. As I said, normally books are written to be sure not to offend anyone. However, I think that in people's head, they may think that way. For instance, I never curse out loud, but in my own head? All the time. It's not that it's bad, but simple nature to use words you know, especially if they convey a strong meaning. Even though I have my own opinion of the book. You have some very interesting analysis which I think are pretty good. ;D

the book was kinda "blah." I found Holden such a boring pessimistic person. He would repeat certain words and ideas so many times that i would get lost and not remember what i just read. i felt like i wasnt going anywhere when it came to this book. Holden never really changed his attitude, that was kind of depressing. A lot of some the good opportunites for to improve himself, were like overlooked. lets just say it it wasnt my most favorite book, but it wasnt the worst.

I thought the book was interesting. Even though at some parts of the book got a little bit confusing. Some parts where also funny because he will be talking of one thing and he would totally go to a different subject. Over all the book was pretty good.

i was disapointed because it had some depressing details in the story and is very controversial. I thought i would learn something but all that he talked about was how terrible his life is and how he smokes and drinks ALL the time

i absolutely loved the book. there was so many symbolic things described in there like the ducks in the pond, his red hat, why he calls everyone 'phony', and the big museum part. it was a very good deep thinking book that will make you end up thinking differently about things. the book was very cleaver and so real, the author did a amazing job creating this book. i agree with maddiewong it was a cool book to read because you had to think and figure things out as you go along. Although i do have to agree with some of the others when they say that all the negative things got kind of annoying

I liked it but i just expected a more conventional ending and i still kinda don't know what happeneded. But it really was a good book with a lot of meaning and hidden meaning that makes the book just even more exciting and intreseting. Next year maybe you should do a more organized in the beginning with a little more planned out like you tell them in the begining to be finished by blah blah date. it just seemed kinda disorganized just a little.

I didn't like the book because it was very boring and about drugs, sex, and drinking and it took place on the east coast, and there's nothing on the east coast that compares to california.

In my first reply I said I disliked the book. I still agree with my decision. Evaluating and thinking about it again, i've come to realize this book is the kind where you really have to think about what you're reading and the meaning behind it. You can't just read the passage and know right off the bat what message it's making. You'll have to read it once or twice and really think before moving onto the next line. In some cases it might have more then one meaning. Obviously those kind of books aren't on my list of favorites.

Holden definitely bugged me in this book. It's like, he's had so many chances to make his life right. He's gone to so many schools! If he jus finished his education maybe he could start all over. Even a high school degree says something. He could get a job somewhere else AND move away like he wanted to. He'd also have money to go back and visit his sister and parents.

i didnt like the book because of holden it was like he had too much going on in his life at the same time. he isnt a phony but he is hiding something he doesnt want to let his gaurd down i think the book would have been better if there was more focus on other characters in the book.
