How did you like the book, and why?
Can you say it in approx 50 words?

i thought this was a very interesting book. i enjoyed the many witticisms that holden so frequently converses about. i think that he definitely has a ways to go and i kinda want to know what happens to him. I think this was a well crafted book that has a charm to it. i think that this has been a world renowned book, and now i know why.

i personally didn't like this book.it annoyed the heck out of me that he hated everything like it happens all the time and it annoys the heck out of him when it is really something that happens rarely.i didn't like how he called people morons, bastards, pain in the asses, and all that stuff.i guess it is probably because i am not used to that kind of language in a book.
but one reason i like it is because teenagers can relate to him.kids are always confused not knowing what to do and they don't know who to turn to.often kids are lonely and seek some attention and do stupid things just to get it.

I don't mind the book. It's not my favorite because it's not very eventful and it lacks a main character that I can relate to because I don't have the same attitude Holden has towards the world. I like it because the title makes you think about it alot and everything is very abstract but besides that I probably wouldn't read it again for fun. Though, i might read it again to better understand the concept of the story.

I liked the book it was good, but it wasn't my favorite book. I am not saying that it is bad tho. the only thing it has a really negative thing on life. Holden is just such a negative person. it annoyed me how he really didn't care about life, since he flucked out of school and didn't care. But some people he didn't want to tell.

Everyone has different opinions on the book so personally for me...i didn't really enjoy the book. It seemed there was really no point in the story. It just talked about life for Holden from his perspective and at the very end it showed him finally realizing what he liked. They're was meaning in the book it was just something you'd have to notice in the text.

i absolutely loved the book. there was so many symbolic things described in there like the ducks in the pond, his red hat, why he calls everyone 'phony', and the big museum part. it was a very good deep thinking book that will make you end up thinking differently about things. the book was very cleaver and so real, the author did a amazing job creating this book.

This book was a real upset to me. I thought it would be a book that you would learn from or have some kick out of, but instead it was dull. I grew really tired of reading about him swearing, smoking, drinking, and his poor me S#@*. I would not recommend this book to anyone unless you like depressing books.

Personally, I'm surprised so many people didn't like this book. In my opinion, it gave the insight of the true human essence, and the book portrays Holden's thoughts without bias of who is reading it. In most books and talks, speech and thoughts are toned down to be more appropriate. Holden shows a more primal thought process that I think is in all of us, but is rarely ever shown, and I quite enjoyed following Holden through his pessimistic (lol vocab word) world. tropygrl, I can see why the language could bother you. As I said, normally books are written to be sure not to offend anyone. However, I think that in people's head, they may think that way. For instance, I never curse out loud, but in my own head? All the time. It's not that it's bad, but simple nature to use words you know, especially if they convey a strong meaning.

I thought the book was...well kind of weird. It was just so random and I didn't like how he always hated things that happened maybe once in anyone's life. But I did like how he always said what was on his mind! But overall, I really liked the ending with Phoebe, that was cute and made me happy! (sorry, i tried to do 50 words. But it's only a little bit over!)

[glow=purple,2,300]I didn't like this book at all. Mostly because Holden assumed most people were phonies. I don't like assumptions at all. He sees people at the theatre when he is with Sally and is judging them. He doesn't even know them, he hears a few things they say and labels them. I think this book had no symbolic or whatever type of meaning. It was very repetitive and everyone was a phony. After a while I didn't even even want to read it. All his stories ended up the same. Holden has and idea, he makes a plan, the plan doesn't go the way he wanted, he gets depressed, everyone is a phony, repeat. So ya.[/glow]

It was hard to get into at first but once i got into trying to decipher what Salinger was saying it bacame easier to read. The ending could have been a little more climatic but thats just how i like my stories to end. I like the dialogue of the book. I think the way Holden talked to us like a teenager and not anything formal or correct made it easier to understand and made reading more fun.
